Theft at Mahakali temple : Canopy, crown worth Rs 15 lakh stolen

Indore ( M.P.) : Thieves struck at Mahakali temple in Khajrana area and made away with a silver crown and canopy in the wee hours on Sunday. Police are trying to trace the culprits through CCTV footage. Value of stolen items is estimated to be around Rs 15 lakh.
It is believed that the theft took place around 3.30 am at the temple located between Khajrana Ganesh

Temple and Jamjam Square.

The incident came to light when temple priest Pawan Sharma waked up around 5 am to offer prayers and noticed a bolt of door was cut and immediately raised an alarm.

When priests went inside, they were shocked to find that a silver crown weighing around 12 kg
and a silver canopy were missing from the idol and immediately informed the police.

SP East OP Tripathi along with FSL team arrived at the scene and took stock of the situation.

"Thieves entered the temple through porous boundary wall and cut open the bolt of sanctum sanctorum with an iron cutter," SP Tripathi told DNA. Four CCTV cameras are installed at the temple and police have availed the footage and a thief is seen cutting the bolt, said Tripathi.

Besides, a four-wheeler parked at the temple was also seen in footage.

However, since lights at temple premises were off, the images captured  on CCTV are not clear, said Tripathi.
